For the last few years Tempe Town lake has had a September 11th memorial called the Healing Field, with a flag for every victim that died.
Almost 3000 flags are put up and each one has a card with a little bio about the person, their age, and where they are from, whether they were on the planes or first responders or working in the towers.
There were 6 with a little teddy bears at the base marking children. Yellow Ribbons denote first responders, combat boots are by the flags of soldiers, Blue ribbons are from flight crews.
My kids were drawn to the flags with Teddy bears at the base, they wanted to know how old the child was, what their name was.
It made an impact later Liberty came up to me and said, "that little girl was 2 on September 11th, she'd be my age now". sad.
I cried when I tried to read a card out loud for the kids, the big kids wandered on their own, we followed the baby through the flags.
Notice we had a spare with us. We'd picked the kids up from school and this friend needed a ride home so he had the privilege of coming along.
It was a great experience. I'm glad we made it this year. Pierce still talks about it.

I'm just going to say, that is incredible. What an experience for kids! My children would be so astounded at how many flags were placed there. It's hard to visualize when you read it in text books...
