Hope's birthday in pictures! proof I am not a cake decorator.and thoughts on doing the cooking.

Happy about her birthday dinner.
here is the group!
it's a tradition to go to Mi Amigo's for birthdays .
we always go there and it isn't the same without my Mom and Gary.
sometimes Lance's mom comes too. not this time.
(i was obviously the one taking pictures)
& ignore Joy looking like a freak.

Joy and my (retarded) brother Gary.
he likes the beanie. even in the summer.
My mom(Joy) and my Joy.

Peyton and Paxton
fresh outta the camera. love that red eye.

Sisters! Liberty and Hope

Daddy's girlin the famous sombrero. everybody had to have a turn. but I'm sparing you the pictures.
6 kids in the same hat that countless others have worn. not just birthday people i think.

Cake time!

i wasn't going to post proof, of my lack of cake decorating skills BUT here they are anyway.
i am not skilled in all things and this was my first official attempt ever. so there we are. and I'll have you know i got the pan last night, started baking at 2 am. and by the time the dang thing baked for the requisite hour, and cooled, and came out of the pan, and everything,
and i blogged a little, and chatted online with my sister who was baking for insane amounts of time last night too, it was roughly 5:30 am. when i finally went to bed. OH YES! insane.

so today after church i had to get the potatoes peeled, and the carrots, and cook them, then make the glaze for the bottom of the cup cake(I'd seen it in a magazine) where you glaze the bottom of the cake with a powered sugar glaze and let dry, so it's covered and looks like a cupcake liner, so cute! Well, it was too thick, then too thin, and then it didn't dry. so when we thought it was dry, we put it on the cake plate, and the stuff underneath smeared down, Then i made butter cream frosting from scratch, and it was too thick, then too thin, and finally we got the right consistency for the decorating, but not before we messed around, making the cake ugly with thick hard frosting.

anyway. the family had to sit around to watch, and since the cake pan holds more than a box of mix, but not 2 boxes, i made cupcakes with the leftover, and the kids got to decorate their own. Lance even got into it. I'm thinking i should have signed us up for the cake decorating class my sisters and brothers are taking.

so there we are, disclaimer that i bet no one even reads since most people peruse the pics, and comment. whatever, it's here just in case. i do not have mad skills at decorating cakes. i tried. and really so not worth the effort. we didn't even eat the giant cupcake yet, we did candles, and then ate cupcakes.

oh and sorry for the white trash birthday girl, she went upstairs, and took off her dress during dinner, and wouldn't get a new one. and yeah that is a diaper. one day does not guarantee success. so i have a cute 4 year old in a diaper blowing out candles. we are classy huh?

this kid doesn't like to blow them out,he just looks at it.

everyone needs to blow out a candle.
here is Paxton with his.
liberty was great at decorating her cupcakes herself.

and the frosting didn't stick over the glaze it kept falling off. and smearing down. good to know for next month. another Birthday coming soon.

and seriously they LOVED the decorating, it has me thinking this is the year for decorating cookies for Christmas. I'm getting brave now.

so the dinner menu this afternoon today was -
Beef Roast(crockpot), mashed potatoes(from scratch),candied carrots, corn, Jello, Rhodes rolls.
it wasn't as delightful for me as i like it to be. lance and i have a theory, it tastes better when you don't cook it all. last week it was better but Lance cooked more of it than me, but today i cooked more.

and i am not dying to eat the cake. i think it's because i made it.
i never eat much when i have baked it. something about it ruins it for me.

so i wanna know,
does dinner taste better when you cook it?
or
when someone else does all the work?

does dessert taste better when someone else bakes it?

do you eat more or less when you are the one baking.

what is your favorite Sunday dinner?

how do you prefer your mashed potatoes? from scratch? or flakes from a box?

EDIT** the cake pan is from Joann's but they have them at Micheals too. and probably any other craft store. ** it was $30 originally but on sale. **

The cake totally turned out super cute. I read the whole disclaimer and was expecting something ugly--but it is better than anything I'd pull off!! Where did you get the giant cupcake pan--I am loving it! And TOTALLY 100% agree on the dinner (or anything really) tastes better when you don't cook it!! I've always thought that!! That's one of my favorite things about Sundays--we go to my moms for a fabulous, yummy dinner every week and I don't have to cook (though I do usually volunteer to bring a side dish or dessert and occasionally the meat).

ps. I still can't get over how much Liberty looks like you. It's like dejavu from 6th grade!!

Oh my gosh, I couldn't believe when I read about your dinner. Is that a Sunday meal or just coincidence??? That's exactly what we had for dinner except that my husband cooked and it tasted better because of it!

I think dessert taste better when someone else bakes it as well.

And for my mashed potatoes...always from scratch!

PS - The cake looks FABULOUS!

I'm so glad you told me where the cake pan is from because that was the 1st question I was going to ask. I have to totally disagree with you and say I think you are dang good at decorating. That cupcake looked so pretty! I do agree that things taste better when someone else cooks it. I think I feel pampered when someone else does it and isn't anything better when you feel pampered? Even the food at the hospital when I have a baby is good to me because I didn't have to cook it or clean up the mess. I love roast and potatoes for sunday dinner, but I'm really not too picky. Mashed potatoes have to be homemade for me. The flakes, or potatoe pearls from food storage are gross.

WOW Hope is Adorable!!!! Happy Birthday Hope! What a fun birthday. You are the BEST mom and you do have mad skills at cake decorating and even madder that you were up until 5:30 baking it and I did read it all. It turned out AWESOME!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you--I love to bake!
To answer some questions: dessert tastes the best when I make it because I can bake well, so I love all of the compliments;
dinner tastes better when someone else makes it because I am a lousy cook; I always eat a TON of dessert no matter who makes it; Pizza is our family tradition for Sunday (mostly order out, but sometimes dine in); and I don't like mashed potatoes. period.

I love that you had the others participate in Joy's birthday with the cupcakes and candles!
I have always enjoyed b-day's and am so looking forward to your next one in about a month. I can't wait to see the cake!

Oh, and one more thing now that I've completely thrown out my comment manners: you look exactly like your mom! How fun is that?

That cake was super cute! No need for the disclaimer, seriously. I can't believe you guys didn't even eat it! :o)

Dinner usually tastes better when someone else makes it. I like everything from scratch, even tho' I don't cook 100% from scratch like I used to. Dessert...tough call. I normally like mine the best.

Sunday dinner favorite: I have to follow the herd and go with the roast beef, etc. YUM. Although I haven't done that in forever. We usually have left over pizza (from scratch!) LOL

You don't give yourself enough credit! the cake is beautiful, and way more than I would have attempted!
I never thought about it before, but I do less eating when I do the baking....hmmm....interesting!

I think the cake turned out great.. when it comes to cake decorating its so easy to be your worst critic!
Lets see as far as dinner, I enjoy cooking dinner and when I want my favorites its best if I cook them cuz I know exactly how I want them to taste BUT if it is just a regular ol' meal it does at times taste better when you don't have to be the one slaving over the hot stove! *wink
(That's why we venture out to restaurants to give Me a break! teehee)

I am not good at decorating cakes either. Mine wouldn't have looked as good as yours. I really think it turned out cute!

I think your cake turned out great! It's so cute! Happy birthday to Joy! She's so pretty!

food in general is always better when i didn't have to make it that includes baking. if i am the one doing all the baking i don't want any of it...the smell of it will start to make me sick.

Man...blogger didn't save my comment... So here's the shortened version!

Mashed potatoes from scrach yuck on the instant!

As long as the food is good I don't care who makes it. It's not my fav thing to do. But I do. Joe's concotions have a tendency to make me hurl so he doesn't cook much unless it's just him or if he bbq's.

I thought the cake was cute and so are the pictures! :)

Ummm...Holy Crap your first cake? So freakin cute! You obviously DO have mad skilzz when it comes to making a cake!
I will have you over at Christmas to make cookies. If I am on the ball enough I am going to do a cookie exchange. One of my fav things to do at the holidays. We are crazy bakin fools and do all kinds of cookies. The kids will love it!
Love the birthday pic in her diaper! Yep, keepin it real. We can so relate!
fav sunday meal? Ham with funeral potaotes or fried pork chops and potatoes. ( I like homemade, kids like instant, so usually do instant~It's easier!)

I personally think you did a pretty darn good job on the cake! Especially for a first time! Go you!

And I completely agree a meal or dessert ALWAYS tastes better when someone else makes it!!! FOR SURE!!!

Sounds like Hope had a fabulous birthday! Lucky girl. (love her blue eyes too)

Your cake is adorable and so much better than I could do...thanks for the kick in the pants...I guess I'm just being ungrateful, huh?

What a pretty blue eyed girl. Happy B-day Hope! Looks like a GREAT day. I think you did SUPER DUPER on the cake. I did my first one for our last b-day and I'm telling you did GREAT!

Jenifer said...

I did read the whole thing. I am waaay impressed with the cake. Sam wanted a barbie cake for her last bday and I thought I would kill myself by the time it was done. The frosting wouldn't stick to the cake, it kept falling off. I don't think I will ever do it again. Love the big cupcake.
The things we do for our kids!

I like real mashed potatoes from scratch. I like garlic and sour cream in mine!
Food is always better when you don't have to cook. But I hate to cook.

Red eye is today's black, so hey, go with it! ;)

My nieces have webkinz and I think they need a 12 step program to kick the habit...i hear its addicting! Hope she enjoys it!

The girls are so adorable. And I actually really like the cake. That is awesome.

You are one brave mama! I would love to bake a fun cake like that and I have no skills either. And I've never taken any decorating classes, but I think I would if I had any time too!

(And I read it all even where you mentioned that people only skim the photo's and I admit I am guilty of that--- sometimes. But I mostly read.)

I think the cake turned out really cute! I love those candles too - way fancy! Dinner sounds fabulous. I like to do the cooking - hate to do the cleaning - hate the cleaning worse when I have to clean up after someone else's cooking.

Holy Cow! The cake is sooo cute!!! Fabulous job! And belated Happy Birthday to Hope!! Looks like you all had fun at Mi Amigos!

Love the cake! Very Girley!! I love to eat cake especially when I make it because then, I know that it is good!! And I know Turkey dinner always taste better when I don't make it. For some reason, that big raw turkey bird just grosses me out and then I can't eat it, but if my mom does it...I have no problem with it!! But other then that I like what I cook!!

blah, blah by lindsey said...

i love that cake and i am sure hope did too.

hands down..things taste better when someone else makes it ;)

i hate box mashed potatoes!

I've never even attempted to bake a cake, so you are a domestic goddess in my book! I think you did a fabulous job!

Your girls are gorgeous. Love the pictures.

And food always tastes better when someone else cooks it!

There is no way in HELK I could pull off that cake. It would look like a muddled mess if I even attempted it. Kudos to you!! Radness oozes from you AND the cake.

She is so cute, who the heck cares about her diaper. GREAT pictures!!

For the record I read every word and several out loud to Justin...maybe I get to all those ding dong dang questions later...I have to go lay down.

Wow! Beautiful cake. After reading the disclaimer I was expecting something unrecognizable. You really blew me away. It is so much better than anything I'd have even attempted. You ROCK!

Potatoes from scratch

Anyone else's cooking is always better.

Sunday dinner is not big for us but Sunday Breakfast is ALWAYS German Pancakes. Yummmmm!

The cake turned out cute! Especially for your first time of doing it that way. Fun pics from her party. I love Paxton's hair. Any yummy dinner! I always think my cooking doesn't taste good when I have to cook for company or bunko. Just too nervous I guess about it being good enough.

Andrea said...

WOW! I LOVE that CAKE!!! It's FABULOUS!!! Nathaniel just saw it and said "Is THAT a cake??? Cool!"

I LOVE it!!! And you did such an elaborate one for your FIRST!! WAY TO GO!!! I think my most elaborate was a Barbie princess cake for Felicia a couple years ago.

I like making cakes & decorating with my simple non-skills. Definitely, I think that not having to cook a meal always tastes best! But I like giving myself a little pat on the back for making a delicious meal. I think cooking is fun! Sometimes coming up with the menu gets old. But making TREATS never gets old!!! I love that!

She's darling! You better watch out in about 10 years!! And that pic of Paxton with his drink ... he looks like a little Matt (your BIL). I can't stand my potatoes from flakes. I LOVE real mashed potatoes.
