Thanksgiving dinner discussion. survey, and sales alerts
ok truth is. i got my assignment of stuffing back with the minor fit. (Thanks Kimm.)
i was only peeved because i was being the marshmallow nazi at the time.
AND i'd been bugging about the assignment list since September. so the one time i'm not around it comes up in conversation and happened. peeved me. but it didn't stop me from having to discuss the issue with my mother this morning. "WHOSE IDEA WAS IT?" apparently it was hers. ;)
so this leaves me wondering.....
how do you do thanksgiving dinner?
where do you go for thanksgiving? stay home? in-laws? travel?
if you bring something what do you bring?
what "makes" thanksgiving dinner for you? (if it's missing it's just not the same. )
what grosses you out?
Gravy preference? brown? turkey? Homemade?
Mashed Potatoes? from scratch? or instant?
do you actually eat Yams?
what about cranberries?
Pie? what is a "must have" at every thanskgiving dessert table?
Pies? from scratch? or store bought?
Whipped cream? from scratch ? cool whip? or from a can?

black friday sales stuff!! so exciting!
yuck about the pink eye, hope you are ok for tomorrow.
thanksgiving..i always bring greenbean casserole. don't know why but it is easy and i like it. mashed potatoes have to be homemade and so does the gravy..it is a must!
We alternate between my side of the family and my husband's side. I prefer eating at my mom's, but who doesn't? She just cooks what I consider to be the more traditional meal. Too bad this year it is not at her house... I like all the traditional fixings, including yams.
I'm so jealous that you get to shop Black Friday. We did last year, but won't be able to make the trip across the border this year. Have fun! I love it!
I'm loving your new header, and your Christmas playlist is awesome!!!
well, my favs:
*Smoked turkey, i did not like thanksgiving turkey at all until i figured out how to smoke it(sorry mom and father in law)
*Yams without marshmallows, i guess i don't see a reason to sweeten something that is already sweet, but i'm weird.
*ham, less so now that i found smoked turkey but it helped me survive years of nasty dry and tasteless turkey meat
*rolls
*Leeshe's cheesecake
As you can see at the risk of offending all family members i really am not a fan of a lot of thanksgiving foods, the rest are good but i could live off just those above. But in the spirit of harmony and something i learned yesterday I'll say i love cranberry sauce, potatoes, marshmallow crap, craploads of stuffing, bread and butter pickles, green beans, mincemeat and pumpkin pies.
really, isn't the rwal problem that there is so much to eat that you like it all but pick what you like most because if you tried to eat it all you have a major colon blow at the park or someone else's house which is never fun.
i love that you get hopped up about black friday!! i'm planning my route now!
thanksgiving would not be thanksgiving for me with out pumpkin pie. i love the stuff. and my oldest makes it!! makes me love it even more! we usually go to our friends bill and jennifer for thanksgiving b/c our families are going out of town. but since my dad-in-law died this year, we are going to my mom-in-laws. which is fine with me b/c i love her tons. totally grossed out by green bean casserole. absolutely hate the stuff. unfortunately hubby loves it (as do most people) so it's always on the table. and sometimes i even make it! mashed potatoes are not mandatory if there is stuffing. then i don't even eat the potatoes. but i do adore sweet potato casserole. and dark meat. love the turkey leg! don't do cranberries. yuck
I bring whatever to Thanksgiving...I know everyone has their favorites that they like to bring so I'll bring whatever is leftover. Bringing the stuffing was so not a big deal to me. I'll be eating a lot of it because that is one of my favorites at Thanksgiving.
I also love jellied cranberry sauce on turkey and on turkey sandwiches after the fact YUMMY!
I do not like pumpkin pie, but love the spice cake pumpkin dessert thing.
Thanks for being the Marshmellow Nazi last night :)
Tyler might have pink eye, we will see what it looks like today after school...I am hoping it's not. He just walked in and it doesn't look like it WHEW!!!
Sorry you have pink eye. I used to love it as a kid. I liked to pick the stuff off in the morning. Gross huh.
Okay - Thanksgiving. Sometimes we have it my house, and sometimes at my MIL's. She makes the best stuffing. My only complaint is she doesn't make enough. I want to eat it for days after, not just one meal. And she makes really good gravy too. She makes it from the drippings of the turkey, but then adds a packet and other spices too. Never enough of that either. I make the mashed potatoes - real, and the rolls - usually from scratch cuz they're the best. We don't do yams, but we do sweet potatoes. Of course we have pumpkin pies, but my MIL always has to make banana cream too. Which really aren't Thanksgiving to me, but they are to her and they're really good, so I won't complain too much. My biggest complaint about Thanksgiving?? Whenever we have it at my MIL's, we don't eat until late. Like 6:00 or so. Hate that part.
Have you ever had one of Poppy's turkey and cranberry sandwiches with cream cheese? They are sooo yummy! That's how I want to eat my leftover turkey this year. But I know you have food issues, so that may not sound good to you.
We usually go to the in-laws but this year she's wigged out so we're doing it at my house. I'll be doing the cooking (frankly hers isn't any good)so that's fine with me. *giggle* I love apple pie and hubby likes cream cheese so we'll have both and I'll make them both. And, since it's at my house, I'm not asking what anybody wants. I'll decide what we're all eating. rofl Do I sound a little blitchy yet?
thanksgiving is all about tradition the whole nine yards kit and kaboodle. usually we go to out of town or they all come here. WE celebrate with dh's side which consists of 24 people. I love it!!!
Love your new header. I like everything made from scratch for Thanksgiving. :) This year it's a my house with the inlaws.

now i am hungry!
This year we are going to CA to spend the holiday with my family. We haven't done that in about 8 years. The last few years I brought a salad (seriously, who eats salad on thanksgiving), but that is what I was asked to bring and I didn't complain because it was easy! I love pumpkin pie with real whipped cream, real mashed potatoes with brown or turkey gravy, and stuffing. I also love yams. I didn't when I was younger, but my mom-in-law makes a killer recipe with tons of butter, salt and pepper. Thanks for getting me to participate in your little discussion. Now I'm hungry.

We always do Thanksgiving with my side of the family. My mother-in-law doesn't really appreciate that, but it's the only time my extended family gets together. No summer reunion, no Christmas party, so I refuse to miss it.
I wish I could have it at my house every year. I love hosting.
First... LOVE LOVE LOVE the new look, especially the new header! (and yes, I know it's been a while since I've been here. I'm a sucky blog friend, and I'm sorry!!)
Coach makes the mashed potatoes here. His trick? Leaves some of the skins in when mashing, and uses white pepper for taste. Mmmmm.... My only contribution is banana bread. The turkey? Soooo not mine, since I can't cook. :)
We used to go to 3 different houses for Thanksgiving! YIKES! That was a LOT of food & travelling all day long back & forth!
Now we have all of Ben's family at our house. Then we have dessert w/ my parents later that evening. {Oh and we do it at dinner time.} I don't want to have EVERYTHING ready by noon! That means waking up super early & working my butt off. We take it easy.
Ok, I cook a HUGE turkey, real mashed potatoes with gravy made from turkey drippings, creamy corn (not creamed corn it's different & yummy), stove top stuffing, and jellied cranberry sauce (although I also made some from scratch last year & it was divine}. My MIL brings homemade rolls & can yams w/ brown sugar & marshmallows (it's actually really good). I also make pumpkin pies & serve with cool whip. Oh and I cook sweet potatoes then sautee them in a little butter & brown sugar and make the green bean casserole (the one with crunchy fried onions on top) but I save these 2 dishes for the day after when it's just US.
I LOVE ALL THE FOOD!!! Mmmmm :)
