the problem with a Memorial day birthday

this morning i was chatting with a friend while shopping in Saver's , she asked if my birthday fell on Memorial day often? and i didn't recall it ever falling on memorial day at the time.

later when i wasn't having a lunch date and movie with my hubtastic (due to him being too ill to party down)

and i was calling the pedicure place frantically trying to get in. feeling disappointed that they celebrate Memorial day and actually shut down for the day.

I REMEMBERED!

i have had at least ONE memorial day birthday before.

my 15th birthday.(at the end of 9th grade)

for my birthday my family surprised me with my VERY OWN birthday party!

my first totally alone, all about just me (to my recollection anyway) birthday party.

(i shared every other birthday with my little sister. )

each of my gifts included MONEY! that was the theme of my party. and a TOTAL SURPRISE.

  • a frame with money in it,
  • a can of soup with money taped on it.
  • a box with rocks inside and money taped to the bottom.(tricky so upon shaking there was no guessing what was inside)
on and on. i got cash . wrapped in a creative way.

when i was done opening the 'gifts'.

we loaded into the Van and all went to the Mall for a shopping spree , so i could Pick my own clothes out.

because as a teenager, i was selective, and very opinionated about my clothes.

and my family KNEW i would love to pick out my own gifts. (since i hate surprises)

So we rushed to the Mall. only to find out at 4:45 , the mall was closing at 5:00 PM in honor of Memorial day.

it was a minor oversight, but made a HUGE DIFFERENCE in the shopping experience.

i went in Express, and actually tried on and purchased a super cute outfit.
then we headed to Gap. (i was way into the Gap all through Jr. High and High school.
so i rushed in, and Grabbed another outfit, Shorts, shirt, and MATCHING HAT! oh yeah!
( the hat was cute. i used to be a hat wearer when i had longer hair)

and then the mall closed. darn it.

the outfits were fabulous!

the thought and effort into the family party was super delightful.

but the timing was a bummer. all because of the early closing time.

that is the only other memorial day birthday i recall.

if there were more? i can't say.

i vividly remember going to the Dollar movie with my fave boys maybe even that night.
I can't recall what we saw, but i remember calling and they met us there. ahhh good times.

and the outfit from Express? caused quite a stir on one of the last couple days of school. it was short so
my legs looked REALLY LONG. and it showcased my nice @$$. it even might have had a decent amount of visible cleavage.
i was working it.

too bad i wasn't aware of it at the time.

still a rad birthday.

today? not so much, but there is time to make up for the lack.

this evening my sister stopped by, and then i spent some time in the kitchen, and eventually went to costa vida, and got take out, and finished off the night and went to Tar-jay and wandered. which was Delightful as always!

and can i just say LOVED all the facebook birthday posts, and comments. it was the highpoint of my day.
so REALLY! thanks for that.

Happy belated birthday! I hope your hubtastic feels better soon to make up for your lack of birthday celebration!

Birthdays on holidays suck! Ben's bday has fallen ON Thanksgiving many times. Kinda cool cuz you get lots of yummy food to eat, but the day isn't really about YOU. It's about the food & tons of family getting together to eat that food. Nothing is really open cuz everyone's busy cooking & eating.

Anyway, sorry everyone is feeling super icky and all the places you wanted to go were closed!

Just tell everyone that your birthday has been extended a couple days because the actual day wasn't up to par! LOL

Hope today is even better than yesterday :)

I feel your pain. My birthday falls on a holiday EVERY YEAR. As a kid and even early teen years I spent every birthday "watching football" with my parents at their friends house.
And a whole LOT of peeps close on New Years Day. :) So I totally know where you are coming from.
The money party is a great idea. I'll have to store that one away for the very near future with Sweet G. She'd LOVE IT.

PS...Did I mention I hate football??

Yeah, my birthday often falls on Thanksgiving. And while I love Thanksgiving it's kind of hard to go out for lunch/dinner on that day, or even the day after because of all the crowds out shopping. And then even when it doesn't, I still have to sometimes share with my FIL. Luvpilot is good at making sure I get my own day though, so it's not always his Dad picking where we go eat, etc.

I think we're getting Costa Vida tonight - yum! There's one right by my house now - yay!

Happy belated birthday, Julie! You have such a great memory of things that happened in your youth. My birthday is the day before 4th of July, so it probably gets lost in those festivities. However, when I was young, all the fireworks always reminded me of my birthday.

It sucks when birthdays fall on holidays or Sundays. Sorry you got the shaft yesterday!
