the "dressing room" unveiled.

Here are some before shots, and then the after. of my new family closet!
aka "the dressing room"

this is the view from the Kitchen doorway.

Before- we'd moved alot of the stuff, note brown doors. TV and purple carpet.

During , the shelves are on 3 walls. and the counter top.
Painted, tiled, floor molding, and moved in (Lance moved stuff in, before i got pictures) the ladder doesn't stay in here, he was hooking up the cable just before this.

this is the counter side during.

after, and here is a realistic view of it. 2 baskets fit in each slot under the counter, that adds up to 8 basket spaces available. just the right amount of sorting. Before shot of the left wall area

After shot- 2 rows of hanging space. i have the kids clothes sorted by kid in age order, little kids on top since i don't allow them to pick their own clothes , and big kids on the bottom,.
you can see the tile pretty well in this shot too. it will be on the whole main floor.

This is the IKEA shelf Before(i didn't take an after. i need to get the toys out of the baskets(you can see which ones in another shot) and I'm making labels for each kids stuff, each separate thing gets a bin per kid, underwear/socks,bottoms, Pj's , we hang shirts, and maybe jeans. depends on if i run out of room. I'm thinking maybe shoes in the bottom bin of each row. logistically this is harder than it used to be because there are 5 rows of 5, and now we have 6 kids,so it isn't just a whole row per kid anymore. i am also moving the hair stuff into this room, and getting a full length mirror. to make it a one stop shop.

Lance is hooking the cable up in here again, with a DVD player, and I'll get a comfy stool for doing hair or folding and hanging laundry. i keep craft supplies, gift wrap, gifts, and holiday stuff in the closet.

did you notice this thing? the top is for random socks, and the bottom is for paired socks until i put them in individual bins. there is underwear in the top too for now. but handy to have a spot for spare socks, while i sort.
Or i thought it would be good for hair bows too. we'll see how this works out for a while though, plus i have way too many bows for this thing.

Seriously impressive. I can't wait to see it in person!! You could do a row of baskets on top of the IKEA shelf for Pierce, then you would have 6 rows?!
Loving the "dirt colored" tile. We have that too, and I am a fan. Totally agreeing (with your earlier post) about preferring wood, except for the upkeep. Gotta love the minimal maintenance of tile!!

Can't wait to see it in Action!!! How great not to have three loads of laundry on the couch waiting to be folded - like I have this morning.

That looks awesome! Wow, looks like it'll make life lots easier...I hate laundry...I barely get it done, and getting it put away? I have three baskets still waiting to be put away, and some of the stuff was washed a week ago..I just keep piling more in one of the baskets with out getting the other stuff put away! I love the "one stop shop" comment!

Pretty tiered basket!

I got my earrings in the mail today - thank you! I love them! I'm going to do my contest on Fred and Bessie's new site very shortly, and the prizes will probably be F&B related. :)

love the tile. What a great room!!! Wowsers! My mom had shelfs for each kid and it worked out great. She had seven kids. I fondly remember standing in the laundry room getting things off my shelf, seems we always got dressed down there. She would have died for all the hanging room.

I am totally jealous of you. My new house the one room that I do not like of course is my laundry room. It got butchered in the building process. :( Maybe some day we will have a family dream dressing room too. Thanks for sharing

My daughter walked in and saw the card and flipped! Then she flipped again over the earrings, making me promise to let her wear them. We'll see. :)

I want one of those rooms, too! That is such a perfect room for a family that has so many kids like we do! Laundry is my biggest, never-ending chore! Janeen

Wow, that looks great. My house is so unorganized right now and I keep using the excuse that I am moving soon so I might as well wait until I am in my new house. Sounds logical, right?

Ooooh! It looks so nice! What a great idea!

That is awesome! I love it. That must cut way down on trips to and from bedrooms (and up and down stairs if you have them). Great idea!! And the sock keeper- very cute! I keep all my kids' socks in a double stackable bin thing too with mated socks on bottom and un-mated on top, and it's in the laundry room right by their shoe cubbies and door to the garage, so it's nice and conveniant! You will love this. Again, great job you guys! Post more pics when it's totally full of everyone's stuff!

I love that room! I wish I had one in my house. I would love a "dressing room" and a food storage room. Maybe someday, but for now we are cramped in my 3 bedroom house with no room to spare.

Way to go Jules! You can come organize my house if you'd like! That is awesome! I LOVE the floor! And as far as the cute little basket, with the spare socks...such a great idea! Funny that you mention it, cause as I was doing laundry today, I found several socks that were missing their match. It was really getting irritating! So what do I do?? I throw them BACK into the hamper and hope they get washed with the match. :) I like your little idea so much better!

Your awesome!! Love your organizing!!!

Oh I am envious! My laundry is all over the house because I don't have a central place to organize it. How wonderful!

crystal said...

Holy COW!!! I have organization-envy.

Katie said...

You are so lucky you have a room for a dressing room! Is it the same as the laundry room? I would love to have all our clothes in one room and not have to go all over the house to put it away! Laundry with 4 kids is bad enough I can only imagine how many loads you are dealing with with 6 kids!
I hate laundry!!!!

Laurie said...

I also have 6 kids and I have been dreaming and designing in my head this exact room. I love it! And I love the sock organizer thing you have. You definately deserve to have a nice place to do laundry. May you have many happy laundry days ahead!
