a little story, i have never shared here.
back in 1999 a lot of people were prepping for Y2k. we were totally on that bandwagon. and we were getting our food storage supplies , and even a few month supply of diapers and formula for our babies (Peyton -age 1 and newborn Liberty), toiletries, and even clothes. Y2k rolls around and nothing happened that day or week or even month. but early in 2000 Lance lost his job, and because we were prepared , we had food, we had soap, and shampoo, and diapers, and wipes, and Formula, and anything we needed. and for those few months, we didn't live high on the hog by any means, but we survived because we were prepared. what money we had could pay our bills, and we had sufficient for our needs. imagine how much less stress we had because we were prepared. while preparing for a hypothetical emergency, we were prepared for a real life emergency- the loss of a job and our financial security.
~~
another story. about a blog friend. a few months ago in Northern California, there were storms with huge winds. the power was out for over 24 hours. they had to huddle by the fireplace for light and warmth. his neighbors had to come stay at their house when their power didn't come back on after 24 hours. they had to go eat downtown, since they weren't prepared to cook at home. They weren't prepared. you could read the stress in his posts for those couple of days. all i could comment at the time was Are you prepared? do you have supplies of water? Do you have 72 kits? does this make you think about getting ready for next time?

~~

and what about the people affected by hurricane Katrina? if they were prepared with 72 hour kits they could have evacuated faster. and safer. right? if they had supplies of water? would they have been better off? those that were prepared didn't suffer like the ones that weren't.

~~

what about minor stuff. you are going to the park for a party, the toddler isn't strapped into the stroller. you hit a bump on the sidewalk and he falls out and splits his chin open. if you have butterfly bandages, you can avoid going in for stitches. but since you aren't prepared, you have to leave, and get it taken care of. STRESSFUL! first aid kits in the diaper bag, and car help relieve a huge amount of stress. people giggle when i ALWAYS have a band aid. but, it's nice to be prepared.

Oh and I have a first aid kit in the car. I can't tell how many times it's come in handy, and for strangers too. Plus I keep an empty garbage sack in their just in case someone gets sick.

What a great post & awesome contest! And YES....we are prepared! We have our 72 hour kits for all of us, our food supply totally rocks (thanks to Micah!) I always carry a first aid kit...and now so does Cameren, we have our emergency financail funds set aside....and it feels SOOOO amazing to have this! I can't tell you the stress relief we feel to know that we are doing what our prophet has asked us to do and will be blessed if we ever need it....but thanks for such a wonderful post to help put it all into prespective! Love ya girl!!!

What a great and timely post. I've been increasing my years supply in the recent months.....I still have so much to do though, and I can't wait to visit preparingwisely to get more ideas.

Our ward is currently focusing on getting our food storage stocked up. In fact, our enrichment activity this month is canning. Went and check out preparingwisely.com and I liked their tips. Thanks for a blog that gives me another reason to stock my food storage!

I'm terrible. We emergency kits in the car but that's about it. It's pathetic. Sometimes I have extra diapers in the diaper bag...if I actually bring that. (hanging head in shame...)

You and your story about using your emergency stuff after Lance lost his job are truly inspring though. It solidifies that I really REALLY need to get on the ball!!

Right now we are dwindeling down our food supply...It is nice having it available.

I am prepared half of the time and the other half not. I don't always have a bandaid on me and when I don't is when I need them.

I checked out there website and it looks really nice.

I definetly could use a new first aid kit. And when we get back on our feet definetly need to start saving up again.

I do have a question, The link does it need to be in a post or can we just link to it on our side bar?

What a cool store! I agree with what you said. Even if there isn't a disaster, preparations can help us with the economy the way it is.

In some ways we are prepared but not like I would like or want to be! I was looking at the website it is awesome. My husband and I will probably be getting some things from there. We have been working on our food storage, and thank goodness we had one because we have had to use it lately!

I have to say! I know Tracey! She is actually married to what we all consider "our good family friend." Her hubby was my brother's mission companion, worked for my dad, and he is just a great guy!! Anyway, she found my blog through you! So, fun!! They are fun people!!

seriously this is one area that we are 100% set up in. my folks hammered this into me at a very young age and they were awesome examples too.

it was hard to get food storage started but we took care of 72 hr kits first. then added to our Food Storage every month. it is good to feel prepared!

We are kinda prepared. I always feel this big push from within to do it. I have worked on it tons but I am on a budget and have to do it in sections.

So we have lots of food items but don't have 72 hr kits. I am lucky to live in utah by one of the church wet pack canning facilities and I take shift whenever they offer them and get cases of what I can. So that is fabulous. We do have some 1st aid but I love the idea of puttng a small one in the car. Love Tracys site! My MIL was just asking me where to get 72 hr kits. Apparently she wants to buy one for every member of the family. She rocks!!!!

Preparing Wisely.com is such a good idea for a store! I'm the queen of 'always be prepared' with snacks, bandaids, etc. However, our previous first aid kit is about 3 years old, so the ointments and such inside are expired and it's time for a new one! This would find a permanent home in our car, and go on hikes with us. Thanks for the chance to win!! laurachilton {at} hotmail {dot} com

I am a horrible friend and haven't been down to Tracey's store- I've been telling everyone about Preparing Wisely but, still haven't been.

Let's not forget about having chocolate in our food storage, too. We had a RS activity where we canned chocolate and butter. Two must haves!

I always pput kits in my car, and then use them up and forget about them. I am notoriously unprepared, I don't even buy canned food, except olives for taco night...and I am within 10 miles of 3 different earthquake faults. Sad huh....

I am a total procrastinator.

But I did see a 72 hour kit for sale at Sam's club last week

Hi, I used to be prepared! I kept a bag full of supplies in our pantry. There were in case of an earthquake, tornado or any natural disaster. Let alone, now the terrorist threats! I really could use the soft sided first aid kit. I would put in my oldest son's car. PreparingWisely.com is a great idea. Thanks,Cindi

I peeked over there and Preparing Wisely reminds me of lots of stores back home (Utah). I live out in the boonies of Colorado now...think tornadoes. A kit like this could totally come in handy should we ever have to hide out in the basement or take off in our car.

This is so cool that Preparingwisely.com is giving away some helpful items! I LOVE band-aids, I mean my kids seem to go thru them like candy! I could use a first aid kit for my car!!!

Pick me please!! :)

Yeah I could use this one. I am NOT prepared for emergencies. When the power goes out I used to literally fall in a ball on my hands and knees and rock back and forth until the lights came back on.
I'm kidding--haven't done that... since I was 27 I mean 7!

blah, blah by lindsey said...
